What is Family Culture?
We live in an amazing time–we can access information from all over the world on the web at any time of the day or night; we can contact people through text messages, voicemail, e-mail, or the ubiquitous cell phone wherever we (or they) are; at the touch of a button we can download music, movies, photos, homevideos.
Why then do so many of us long for a simpler, slower life? Why do we think about times in the past–the 1800s, the family farm–with nostalgia; “They had the good life,” we think wistfully. What did they have that we don’t?
The answer is strong family ties and a sense of community. Sure, we’re more digitally connected now than ever, but how many of us feel connected in a meaningful way to our community? To our friends? To our families?
In the past, there weren’t i pods and blackberries and ubiquitous cell phones taking up time and emotional energy–families and communities put time into each other. Over days, weeks, months, and years this shared time developed into a family culture of shared memories, shared experiences, and shared traditions that went much deeper than buying Christmas tree every December and dying Easter eggs every Spring. These ties made them feel connected in a way that families today simply do not.
That is the purpose of this site–to encourage you daily with specific tips and ideas on how to recover the lost art of the family culture within your own family and community.
